Wool and silk demand special care in pressing. Woolen or silk material not made up is pressed on the wrong side, but skirts and coats generally look better pressed on the right side over a heavy cloth pad, covering the material to ba pressed with a damp cloth. They may be satisfactorily pressed at home if the following precautions are kept in mind: a. Lay a damp cloth on the material. b. Use a moderately hot iron. c. Use a heavy cloth for pressing heavy materials. d. Press--do not rub--with the iron as rubbing is likely to cause wrin kles. Keep iron in motion. Let out the steam occasionally by raising the pressing cloth. If the garment is pressed until it is absolutely dry, it is apt to be shiny. Hang where it will dry before wearing, otherwise it will wrinkle. To remove shine, sponge garments with ammonia water (one tablespoon to one quart of water). Cover with dampened cloth and press on right side. Remove cloth and brush. SHORT CUTS IN SEWING As you become more expert with your needle you should pay more attention to methods that will lighten your work. Many hours of basting may be eliminated by the use of pins and a flat iron. The use of the simple machine attachments will save a great deal of handwork. Use of flat iron and pins--a. Pin seams instead of basting (Put in pins at right angles to edge.) b. Press wrinkled material before cutting garment. c. Press wrinkled patterns. d. Press the turns of a hem. e.
